"Reading books to shelter dogs makes
the world a little bit better for everyone."
"They aren’t so much following along with the story, but as just hearing a calm human’s voice, which is very comforting to most of them. "
- Arin Greenwood.
Relation of Reading Voice to Dog’s Hearing Range
Tone - Lower frequencies calm the canine (and human) nervous system.
Tempo - 40 to 60 BPM (beats per minute). The heartbeat, breath, and brainwaves slow down to match the external periodic rhythm, which make you calm and comfortable as well as the dog.
Proximity Study - How to sit together?
Distance
Dogs usually have a critical distance of around 3 feet.
Orientation
Approaching the dog from the side is the least threatening way to approach a dog. Making direct eye contact is intimidating for dogs.
Level
When you are about two feet away from the dog, It is better to kneel or squat down to the dog’s level. Dogs feel more comfortable in a lower position.
