Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA

Worked directly with the Getty team, including the design, curating + research, education, marketing, and engineering. Developed spatial concepts, a set of casing (free standing and wall mounted) as well as special graphic applications and overall scheme for the upcoming “Golden Kingdoms | Pacific Standard Time LA/LA” exhibition launching in September 2017 at the Getty.

GOLDEN KINGDOMS

Borderless Journey

A spatial design of “connection and fragmentation”.

The journey of the Golden Kingdoms is one that traverses through the confines of space, class, culture, and time. The audience will experience this journey through the metaphor of pixels, which represent the sparkling golden pieces of the exhibition and their fascinating stories.

Before each section is introduced, there will be an icon of a key highlight artifact that will later be re-introduced in the last section.

Walkthrough

Pixel Encounter

We want to attract the audience with gold vinyl stickers, and the pixelation which represents the sparkling golden pieces of the exhibition lures people up steps. Also, it looks like a map of Latin America at certain angles. As you move up, you are physically moving from South to North in geography. We wanted visitors to follow the golden path continued from the stairs. The vinyl gold path separates entrance to exit.

Pedestal and Description Design

These are some of the podium designs and how the graphics will be applied to them.

Pedestal Family

-Type (W x H x D in Inch)

Podium1Asset 1.png

Single Freestanding

- Solo, Cluster I,

  Cluster II,  Large.

In the single freestanding pedestal, there will be a dull yellow pixel that will look 3D because it is applied on 3 different planes. This will give a chance to have 2 different languages for the information graphics. It breaks different dimensions and languages(English/Spanish) to go back to the Borderless Journey theme.

Wall Mounted

- Shelving

The Wall Mounted Shelving pedestal is good for displaying a series of objects or sets. The graphic information is on the wall but overlaps with the glass case. In this overlap, we can place an object where the graphic and glass crosses to highlight an object.

Wall Mounted

- Built-In

The Wall Mounted Built-In pedestal allows us to place many objects without distracting too much of the highlight objects we want to showcase. It will create a beautiful backdrop and also make each individual object meaningful. The graphics will be placed in a strip.

Grid Freestanding

The Grid Freestanding pedestal is for the Kingdom to Kingdom section where the artifacts are numerous. There is a grid pixel system to help the layout of the glass cases and the graphics. With the use of graphics crossing over the glass cases, the layout and the height of glass can be flexible. This pedestal will be used for the merchandise section because it can allow various combinations and layouts that can be reused for other exhibitions.

Street Banner Design

The banner design expresses the crossing boundaries experience that the audience will have through the exhibition.

Each panels represent time(current/ancient), space(los angeles/ Latin America), cultural differences.
